Panama abandons plan for power link with Colombia

The government of Panama abandoned an electricity interconnection project with Colombia.

The president of Panama, Ricardo Martinelli, said that the main reason for leaving is to use the $500 million that the Colombian project required, and focus on improving Panama's own electricity distribution.

Another factor that Martinelli said required further analysis is the environmental impact it would cause, since an interconnection project with Colombia would mean installing lines through rainforest or sea.
