Panama Canal chief executive says expansion will expand commodity trades

Monday, October 18, 2010

The expansion of the Panama Canal will redraw liquified natural gas (LNG) and bulk commodity routes, the Panama Canal Authority chief executive, Alberto Alemán Zubieta, has predicted.

The waterway’s 2014 expansion “will open up new trades that are not coming through canal today, such as LNG”, Aleman told the Caribbean Shipping Association conference in Jamaica.

He predicted that canal expansion will slash transit times to Pacific Basin markets for Trinidad’s LNG, increasing sales opportunities in Chile and Asia.
