Panama Canal expansion opens up new gas market

Monday, February 11, 2013

The benefits produced by the Panama Canal’s $5.25 billion expansion has opened up yet another market – the flow of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US to Asia.

Shipments of the fuel, along with rising commodity and energy cargoes between the US, Latin America and Asia, are likely to provide the largest sources of demand growth when the Canal project is completed.

“This could be a significant boon to our business. There’s been a lot of interest in going through the expanded Panama Canal with LNG cargo from the Atlantic to Asia,” Canal Administrator Jorge Luis Quijano has said.
