Panama Canal will earn $1.3 billion this year

The Panama Canal is expected to get $2.3 billion in income this fiscal year, which ends in September, said the Canal administrator, Alberto Alemán.

From July, the tariffs for using the Canal will go up depending on the size of the vessels. Large ships will pay 15 percent more, while smaller ships could pay 113 percent more.

Ecuador, Chile and Japan have expressed their disagreement with the new tariff policy, stating that it comes at a difficult time in the global economy.
