Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Major foreign investments have been a crucial factor in making Panama the region’s leader in access to technology, including cell phone service and Internet, according to the 2011-2012 Report on Global Competitiveness among 142 countries, released last week by the World Economic Forum.

Guatemala is in second place in the region, with 126 cell phones per 100 people, although Internet service is not widespread.

Third-place Costa Rica is the Central American country, which invests most in research and innovation.

The top spots globally belong to Sweden, Switzerland and Norway.

The numbers represent the positions of the region’s countries in the global ranking.

1. Panama 28
2. Guatemala 48
3. Costa Rica 68
4. El Salvador 73
5. Honduras 81
6. Nicaragua 127
