Panama pension funds reach $5.5 billion

Investment and pension funds in Panama account for 13 percent of the country's gross domestic product, according to authorities.

The figure represents some $5.5 billion each year in both categories.

But the country needs to promote private investment funds, as only 3 percent of the economically active population invest in that product, said Marielena García Maritano, president of Panama's pension and investment fund administrators' chamber.
