Panamanian ports handled more than 4.4 million TEUs, or 20-foot containers, in the first eight months of the year.
The figure represents 1.4 percent more than in the same period last year, the Panamanian maritime authority said.
The figure is also an improvement from the same period last year, when the country's ports registered a 4.8 percent drop in their cargo handling compared with the same period in 2012.
