Panama's nascent pineapple exports aim to double in size over next seven years

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Panama's pineapple exports to the United States and Europe are expected to double over the next seven years thanks to government subsidies to help the industry, claims a major grower.

Large fruit industry players like Fyffe have set up their own pineapple farms in the country over the last two years.

Panama has 3,500 hectares devoted to pineapples compared with Costa Rica’s 50,000 hectares and has only started exporting in the last six to eight years.
