Panama’s Varela buries five-cent tax on gasoline

President Juan Carlos Varela of Panama, did a quick side step on Sunday as the government faced mounting opposition to a five cent a liter increase in the gasoline tax to finance a pension increase for retirees.

He ordered Minister of Health Francisco Javier Terrientes to withdraw the bill from the National Assembly.
