Peace deal over banana workers’ strike fails to halt labor unrest throughout Panama

Trade unions and other organizations called for a strike in Panama early today, despite a peace accord at the weekend following serious violence in a conflict with banana workers.
 
Construction, schools, major industries and some commerce will be hit as workers and student groups challenge the government.
 
The labor minister, Alma Cortés, said today’s strike is illegal.  
Leaders of the building industry pleaded for dialogue.
