Peña Nieto claims victory in Mexican election

Enrique Peña Nieto, will be the next Mexican president, according to preliminary results from yesterday's elections.

Peña Nieto's party, the PRI, ruled Mexico for 70 years before the historic elections of 2000. However, despite opinion polls suggesting he would win by a landslide, the results show he is not far ahead from his closest competitor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

For Mexico's current governing party, the Partido Acción Nacional, the result is a severe blow. Its candidate, Josefina Vázquez Mota, has already publicly accepted her defeat.
