Police in Nicaragua ban private-sector march

Thursday, January 24, 2019

The Nicaraguan police refused permission for a private-sector march that was planned for today in a bid to renew peace talks between the government and the opposition.

In a communiqué, the police accused the business leaders of being criminals and involvement in efforts to launch a coup.

Juan Sebastián Chamorro, one of the leaders of the proposed march, said that statement was "totally unacceptable". In the interests of public safety, however, he said he and his colleagues would obey the ban.
