Private construction in Nicaragua plummets

Private construction in Nicaragua dropped 22 percent in the second quarter of 2014, compared with the same period last year, according to central bank figures.

The figure shows a continued deterioration of the sector, as figures for the first quarter show a 10 percent drop from the same period in 2013.

For economist Adolfo Acevedo, the main reason the drop is less investor confidence in the country, as opposed to the central bank's view that it comes as a consequence of a severe drought that has swept Central America, as well as earthquakes that hit Nicaragua in April this year.
