Regional fisheries leaders in plans to tackle poaching by register of vessels

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

Central American and Dominican Republic fisheries representatives held a meeting to discuss ways of minimizing illegal fishing.

The countries agreed to start a fishing vessel register throughout Central America, said the director of the region's fishery authority.

Honduras is the region's leader in aquaculture. It produces $300 million a year worth of prawn, lobster and tilapia. Honduras is the world's number one tilapia fillet exporter.
