Remittances to be sent by cellphone messages

From next month, emigrants from three Central American countries will be able to send home remittances to their families by simply sending a cellphone text message.

In a region where many more people have cellphones than bank accounts, the system has clear advantages, above all in rural areas.

The system will begin in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. It is being launched by Tigo Guatemala, a unit of the European telecom that specializes in Latin America and Africa.
