Remittances to El Salvador surge to $1.9 billion

Remittances sent home to their families by emigrants from El Salvador came to $1.9 billion in the first half of the year, a 7.3 percent increase on the same period of 2011.
In June alone, remittances came to $318 milliom, up from $299 million a year earlier.
"The behavior of the remittances is closely related to the state of the US economy," said El Salvador's central bank.
