Remittances to Guatemala are growing fast

Remittances are growing fast in Guatemala. But the number of people in poverty is also increasing, according to official figures.

In the first three quarters of this year, remittances totaled $6.8 billion, a 12 percent year-on-year increase.

Meanwhile the Inter-American Development Bank reports that between 2006 and last year, the proportion of people living in extreme poverty rose from 32 to 36 percent.
