Remittances to Guatemala begin the year with a bang as increase hits 7.7 percent

Income from remittances in Guatemala increased 7.7 percent in January, compared with the same month last year.

Guatemalans working abroad sent $305 million to their country, the highest amount for January since 2009.

Edgar Barquín, president of the central bank of Guatemala, predicts a 5 percent increase in remittances this year. Last year, remittances reached $4.3 million.
