Right-left alliance in Mexico to face maverick candidate

Monday, May 22, 2017

Mexico’s conservative opposition National Action Party, the PAN and the leftist PRD have called for a “broad alliance” for the 2018 presidential elections in an attempt to oust the ruling PRI party and halt maverick leftist Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The two parties — the first, the party of the business establishment and the second, a dwindling force that has lost a stream of members to López Obrador’s Morena party — have very different ideologies, but say they want to install a coalition government in Latin America’s second-biggest economy for the first time.
