Russia surges to importance as $20 million alternative market for Costa Rican bananas

Russia has become the most important alternative market for Costa Rican bananas, after the United States and the European Union.
In 2009, sales to Russia represented $11.9 million. This year the target is $20 million, according to Mijail Rázov, representive Russion-owned Grupo JFC, owner of Bonanza Fruit, the only company in Costa Rica that sells bananas to Russia.
Bonanza began exporting bananas in 2008 with sales of only $1.2 million.
