Slim challenges Cemex and Holcim in Mexico cement

Elementia, Carlos Slim's newest venture, has surprised the Mexican cement market, currently dominated by Cemex and Holcim Apasco, a unit of the Swiss producer.

Elementia, a distributor of construction materials, has only just opened a cement in the central state of Hidalgo. Now it will be merged with two existing lafarge factories.

Slim's partner in Elementia is Antonio del Valle, owner of Mexichem, a producer of chemicals and plastic tubing.
