Some 70 percent of cellphones in Costa Rica prepaid

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

Prepaid cellular service has won the hearts of Costa Ricans, accounting for 69 percent of all active cellular lines in the country, bringing the cellular penetration to 101 percent last year.

Only fours years ago, market penetration was 42 percent, with the growth attributed to the arrival of foreign operators and the adaptation of the prepaid system.

Carlos Raúl Gutiérrez, chairman of the telecom regulator Sutel, says that half the devices connected to the three networks are approved, allowing better services to users.
