Spanish bank will ramp up regional competition

Competition among banks in Central, America will be ramped up by the entry of Banco Popular de España when it acquires the consumer operations of Citi in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panamá.

The Spanish group is poised to take over the Citi operations for some $1.5 billion, Bloomberg says.
