Tariffs may unleash trade war between Dominican Republic and Central America

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

The Dominican Republic’s Customs director, Rafael Camilo, rejected Costa Rica’s allegations that Dominican Republic violates Cafta, and he accused Central American countries of unfair trade practices.

Last week the Central American countries agreed to file a complaint before the World Trade Organization against the Dominican Republic, claiming that tariffs levied on several of the region’s products violate Cafta.

Camilo confirmed that Dominican Republic has placed taxes on 26 products from Central America and which are subsidized by their respective governments.
