Thousands of US immigrants face abrupt end to legal status

Tuesday, October 24, 2017

The legal status in the United States of more than 350,000 citizens mainly of El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua  is in jeopardy because President Donald Trump has not committed to renewing a program for those countries that allows them to live and work in the US.

The program, known as Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, was supposed to last between six and 18 months, but the government continually renewed the program for nearly two decades.
