Tourism affects Costa Rican melon exports

Monday, January 14, 2013

Costa Rica's melon production is declining due to high production costs which affect most producers.

The competition from other markets where production costs are much lower is stopping Costa Rican farmers from increasing their income from exports.

Another factor which is affecting melon production is an increase in tourism in melon-producing areas such as Guanacaste, which in turn lowers the availability of farm workers, according to Erick Quirós, director of Agriculture and Regional operations of the Ministry of Agriculture.
