Transport union blocks El Salvador borders

A Central American transport workers' union has indefinitely blocked the highway border entrances to El Salvador from Honduras and Guatemala.

The stoppage was organized by the union after it failed to reach an agreement with the Salvadoran government over the elimination of a fee worth $18 for the use of an x-ray scanner on cargo trucks.

Sector representatives have expressed their anger claiming that Salvadoran customs officers apply the charge even when some of the border checkpoints have no x-ray equipment.
