Trump fanbase stumbles over wall and trade tariffs
Donald Trump's confrontational rhetoric swept him to a famous victory that won him the White House two years ago. The problem is that the same rhetoric no longer is producing results.
Two of the key issues for the president, trade and immigration, are working against him. Last year's trade deficit surged to the level of a decade ago, and the number of people crossing the border from Mexico reached a 12-year high in February, despite Trump's promises to close holes in trade policy and put a brake on the entry of foreign would-be immigrants.
The tariff barriers imposed on US trading partners have failed to reduce the trade gap nor have the America First policies boosted exports. On top of that, his efforts to build a wall at the border with Mexico have not convinced his supporters, El País reports, in Spanish.
