Tsunami of rising prices threatens to swamp families and firms in Costa Rica

A tsunami of tariff increases is sweeping though Costa Rica's public services. Increases in electricity, water and fuel are hitting the budgets of families.

And not only families -- companies are being hit by higher production costs.

Industrialists say that the tsunami is eroding their ability to compete. Electricity tariffs alone have risen by 100 percent over the last four years.
