The economic costs of violence in Central America amount to $6.5 billion a year, the Inter-american Development Bank reported.
The amount is about 8 percent of the region’s gross domestic product. More than half of the costs amount to health care.
In an effort to combat the violence Central America is this week presenting a regional strategy at a meeting attended by leading aid donors in Guatemala.
