Chinese consortium finally wins contract for fourth Panama Canal bridge

After months of claims and counter-claims, a Chinese consortium has been formally awarded victory in a tender for construction of the fourth bridge over the Panama Canal, the public works ministry announced at the weekend.

The winning consortium, known as Cuarto Puente, consists of China Communications Construction and China Harbour Engineering. It was originally named as the winner in June, but at least one other consortium objected. the contract is valued at $1.42 billion.

The bridge will be 6,500 meters long, with six lanes for vehicles, and two for Line 3 of the Metro, including a monorail.
